日本人として恥ずかしい話です

日本人は、相手の立場で物事を考える能力に欠けている。
自分が海外で差別されると大騒ぎするくせに、身内の差別には呆れるほど甘い。
今後、「ジャパニーズオンリー」なんて看板が貼ってある店を見かけたら、
店主に抗議して、もうその店には入らないことにしますよ。

在日外国人に対する差別問題：その解決に向けて

この本は小説としてではなく、これから資料になる史書として読んだ方が良いと思う。つまり、話を語ろうとしているよりも、筆者は「人種差別の事件などは愛する日本でも実際に起き、社会の進歩を阻む障害になっている」ということを証明しようとしているように思われる。従って、引用や統計を用いて主張を裏付ける箇所が多く、国内での人種差別、その存在と悪影響の実例を挙げながら、原因まで深く分析して解説する。参考書として、特に「日本にはそういうことはないだろう」と言われる場合、凄く役に立つと思うが、引用などがありすぎていることによって、粗筋の展開や流れは所々分かりにくくなる。
又、この本はただ日本の「バッシング」ではなく、在日外国人の団結力を妨げる心の狭いねたみや内輪もめを記述し、温泉や小樽市側の考え方も読者でも納得できるように解説する。（ただ、人種擁護団体のNPO「一緒企画」とBENCIの役目や援助を否定することは気になる点の一つである。）
最後に、感動的なシーンも豊富である。特に、訴訟のきっかけになったメール（11頁〜13頁）を読んでも、訴訟を始め、この本の発行も何で必要なのか、納得できない人はいないだろう。

Not the detail one hoped for

David Aldwinkle, or Arudo Debito, has written a book on his personal crusade against Otaru City onsen owners who refused to let non-Japanese use their facilities, and it is true that we learn a little about that. Most of it we learn through copious numbers of newspaper articles that he has copied wholesale. The rest we learn piecemeal in the rambling conversations with friends, enemies, enemies who become friends, and friends who become enemies, which he appears to have memorized in tedious detail. As an aside to his tireless crusade, David intermittently prints pages of conversations he has translated from a mailing list he belonged to. By page 200 we have read through many pages of a mailing list that was a part of ISSHO Kikaku, a project called BENCI, and we still do not have any idea what its purpose is except to act as an Ardwinkle gallery. The other members are either complimenting him or criticizing him, and doing nothing else in particular. He mentions by name the head of ISSHO, whose entire vocabulary appears to consist of "Give me a progress report, David." The good news is that David kindly gives us his web sites which document this case. Visits to either this or the ISSHO site will give you plenty of information on the Otaru Onsen Case. And, all for free! A final note: In view of his liberal use of newspaper articles and the mailing list transcripts, there were no credits or "used by permission" notes except for photographs. The legal implications here are endless, and there is also a matter of accuracy. Were these the actual articles? Are the mailing list ﾒconversationsﾓ true? I tend to doubt that they are, and by the time I was finished with the book, I was as unhappy with David as his mailing list friends appeared to be, and just as glad to be rid of him.

「差別」について考えさせられる良いアプローチだが、、、

私たち日本に住む「日本人」を意識していない多くの「日本人」にとって、いわゆる「外国人」とともに暮らすということがどういうことなのか、小樽に起きたことは他人事ではない。このような形で出版物が出たことには意義があると思う。
しかし、時系列に事実を羅列している稚拙な構成のためか、この書物を著そうとした有道氏のスタイルから得た実感は「情緒的な日記」を読まされたような感覚だ。
個人的な人間関係の会話や活動組織と思われるグループ間のコミュニケーションの引用が冗長で読みにくい。
ところで、あの引用と思われる数々の文章は全て関係者の意向を汲んで敢えて掲載したのだろうか？であれば、この本は有道氏と彼と関わりのあった人々との共著？それとも、有道氏の戦いは対小樽市や温泉だけではなく、彼を巡る人間関係だったというところを主張したかったのか？
いずれにしても、その観点で読むと、有道氏を巡る人間関係を理解していない読者には全体の流れに意味不明の箇所があまりに多い。
有道氏の私的な経験は理解できるが、社会に投げかけるメッセージとしては、より客観的な分析も欲しいところ。
日本に暮らし、学び、働く多くのnon-Japaneseと、いわゆる「日本人」が、違いを超えて豊かに暮らせる社会をつくるために、私たちは一体どうしたらよいのか。「外国人」「見た目が外国人」であるという「差異」によって法の前で差別を受けることは[おかしい]のだ、ということをもっと率直に、有道氏自身のオリジナルなメッセージで訴えて欲しいと感じた。
なにしろ、この手の差別は日本では日常茶飯事なのだから！

Great book! A must for all Japanese!

Debito went a long way to try to simulate into Japanese society. I can't wait for the English version to come out to give to all my non-Japanese speaking friends.
